Our New Tassel Awards Program has been adapted from the Japanese martial arts tradition of indicating level of experience and achievement. In the old days of Japan, the white belt was dyed to a new color. All of this came about shortly after the Second World War when Japan was a very poor country, and dying the belts to a new color was a cheap way to have a visible, simple and effective ranking system. Due to the dying process, it was practical to increasingly use darker colors. We are proud to announce that starting this year; all students enrolled in method classes at the Academy and who participate in our student showcase concert will be awarded a colored tassel designating their level of achievement. These tassels are meant to be worn on instrument tuning pegs. Here are our achievement levels. Yellow: Completed first term of lessons (Guitar
1) The last tassel, The Gold Rainbow, represents a commitment to ongoing learning. We hope this commitment lasts a lifetime! The rainbow of colors represents our repeated return to being a beginner. Like the beginner, when we keep our mind open to learning, we truly master our music! These awards are only given to those students
who participate in our student showcase.
