The following is a description
of the classes that are offered
GUITAR
1
This class
assumes you know nothing or very little about the guitar. Essentially, we
are starting from ground zero. It’s also for the guitarist who may have
been playing for awhile but never got beyond strumming a few chords and
whose friends are tired of hearing them play the same 2 songs in their
repertoire! These students may know nothing of music theory or they may
want to go back and fill in gaps of knowledge, building a solid foundation
of musicianship. Covered topics will include: defining the parts of the
guitar, naming the strings, playing with a pick, right hand finger style
technique, note reading, learning the names of all the notes on the guitar,
strumming patterns, reading notes and rhythms, music fundamentals and theory
applied to the guitar, how to read tablature, and learning the 15 essential
chords. Materials include music from the classical, folk, blues, and rock
traditions. Prerequisite: No prior experience is necessary.
GUITAR
2
This class is a continuation of Guitar 1. Since in
many ways these students are still laying the foundation from which to grow
on, we fondly refer to these students as “Rusty Beginners.” Students in this
class are already beginning to have a good working knowledge of the 15
essential chords, can read notes in open position and are now ready to
explore the far reaches of guitar musicianship! Covered topics will
include: how to make up licks, fills & solos in any key using the pentatonic
and blues scales, major scale harmony, barre chord shapes, picking
techniques, right hand finger style patterns, rhythm guitar styles and
strums. Materials include music from the classical, swing, country, folk,
blues, and rock traditions. Prerequisite: Completion of “Guitar 1” or prior
approval from instructor. Folks usually take this class twice before
moving on to Guitar 3.
GUITAR 3 & 4
This class is for the student who
already has a good command of open position chords, understands basic music
theory such as how a major scale is constructed and knows the difference
between a major and a minor triad. Students entering this class should
also be able to play a basic barre chord and play a scale or two. Topics
will include: Rhythm guitar styles, how to construct a guitar solo using
pentatonic scales, understanding the three basic song forms (standard,
pop/rock, and blues), the five major scale patterns, acoustic fingerstyles,
open tunings, slide guitar, and traditional blues. Prerequisite: Completion
of Guitar 2 or prior approval from instructor
ADVANCED GUITAR: CLASSIC ROCK FOR TEENS
Designed for
teens who are advanced players and want to focus on classic rock playing
techniques, this class will include time spent developing reading skills,
learning new chord forms, playing rhythmic exercises, improvising, music
theory and harmony. Prerequisite: Completion of “Guitar 2” or prior
approval from instructor. Most importantly it is designed for young guitar
players to have fun making music with others!
BASS 1
Designed to teach the student how the bass functions
in a rhythm section, some of the subjects will include: reading in the bass
clef, rock and blues bass lines, playing with a band, scales, right hand
technique, discussion about the great bassists, proper equipment and care of
the bass, and creating a bass part from chord progressions.
BASS 2
This class is a
continuation of Bass 1. Subjects will include: reading in the bass clef,
rock and blues bass lines, playing with a band, scales, right hand
technique, discussion about the great bassists, and creating a bass part
from chord progressions.

to the stand up bass.

mandolin to those with minimal or no prior experience. We’ll cover
tuning, basic right and left hand techniques, chords, and simple rhythm and
melody playing. Bring a playable mandolin (see Matt) and a relaxed
attitude!

designed for songwriters, instrumentalists and composers. If ever there was
a class to increase your knowledge of how music works this is the one!
You’ll learn how chords are constructed and how they fit together when
composing a song. Also covered will be how to improvise a melody, jazz and
rock improvisation techniques and how to add more color to basic chords,
making them ore interesting and contemporary. You’ll learn how to compose a
bass line in different styles, song forms and chord scale relationships.
Open to anyone with some basic music experience and a desire to understand
